Knokke-Heist, situated at the northeastern tip of the Belgian coast bordering the Het Zwin nature reserve and the Dutch border, is the undisputed flagship of Belgian kitesurfing. The spot is synonymous with Surfers Paradise, the iconic beachfront club founded by Frank Vanleenhove that introduced board sports to Belgium.
North Sea wave and tidal conditions
Knokke-Heist faces the southern North Sea, offering energetic conditions. Southwesterly winds blow side-shore from the left, delivering steady wind and organized swell that breaks over outer sandbanks. As the tide floods, water fills the channels between the sandbanks, creating excellent kicker ramps for boosting big air jumps.
Coastal groynes awareness
Like much of the Belgian and Dutch coast, Knokke’s shoreline is punctuated by wooden breakwaters (strandhoofden). At high tide, these groynes are submerged beneath the water, while at low tide they are exposed. Visiting riders must familiarize themselves with groyne locations and launch within the designated wide gaps.
Surfers Paradise club experience
Surfers Paradise provides world-class infrastructure. Built directly on the sand like a classic California surf shack, it features hot showers, a beachfront sauna, an outdoor jacuzzi, equipment storage, a pro shop, and an atmospheric restaurant and bar where European riders celebrate great sessions.
