Colico, located at the northern tip of Lake Como where the Adda River enters the lake beneath the imposing peaks of Monte Legnone, is northern Italy’s premier Alpine freshwater kitesurfing haven.
The Breva thermal wind mechanism
Like many Alpine lakes, Lake Como is governed by mountain-valley thermal circulation. On clear, sunny days, the southern plains of Lombardy warm up faster than the Alpine peaks to the north. This temperature differential triggers the 'Breva'—a steady Southerly wind that travels up the lake, accelerating into the Colico basin between 12:30 and 17:30 at 14 to 18 knots.
Beach launch and boat lift services
Colico is one of the few spots on Lake Como that possesses a wide, sandy-grassy beach (Prato di Colico) where riders can launch directly from the shore. Further south at spots like Dervio or Gera Lario, many kiters opt for 'lift service'—boat shuttles that take riders into the middle of the lake to launch directly from the water.
Safety and Alpine weather watch
Because the lake is surrounded by steep granite mountains, you cannot simply walk back upwind along the shoreline if you drift downwind. Keep a vigilant eye on the northern horizon: summer thunderstorms over the Swiss Alps can suddenly reverse the wind into a hazardous North gale within minutes.
