Spot Guide & Local Knowledge

Plage de l'Espiguette, situated at the tip of the Camargue delta near Le Grau-du-Roi and Port Camargue in the Gard department, is one of the wildest and most majestic coastal landscapes in Europe. With over 10 kilometers of undeveloped white sand dunes reaching up to 12 meters in height, it feels like an authentic Mediterranean desert.

The Camargue wind machine

Espiguette catches both major wind systems of southern France: 1. Mistral (North/Northwest): Sweeping down the Rhône Valley, it blows side-offshore across the hook of the cape. The sandbanks create a mirror-flat speed strip near the shoreline where riders achieve blistering speeds. 2. Marin (Southeast): Blows onshore from the open sea, building clean, rolling wave trains that break over sandbanks with zero rocks.

Endless space and wilderness

The beach is so vast—often more than 500 meters wide from the dunes to the water’s edge—that launching and flying kites is completely unhindered. You can walk for miles without seeing a single building, surrounded only by sea oats, wild dunes, and open sky.

Port Camargue amenities

Just a few minutes drive away lies Port Camargue, the largest pleasure marina in Europe, offering comprehensive nautical services, waterfront restaurants, and fresh seafood.

Safety precautions and local advice

Bring plenty of drinking water in summer, as the walk from the car park across the sand dunes can take 10 minutes under the hot sun. With strong offshore Mistral, stay close to the sandbar.
