Porto Pollo, nestled in northern Sardinia on the narrow sandy isthmus connecting the mainland to Isola dei Gabbiani, is an iconic European wind mecca. Positioned directly inside the Strait of Bonifacio (Bocche di Bonifacio), it captures the full compressed fury of westerly winds roaring between Corsica and Sardinia.
The double-bay phenomenon
The isthmus creates two completely contrasting arenas. On the windward western side, choppy water and swell roll in, offering kickers for boosting. On the leeward eastern side, the wind blows offshore across the narrow sand bar, producing a dead-flat turquoise speed strip where world-class riders test high-speed runs and power moves.
Wind characteristics and equipment choice
Winds here are notoriously punchy and powerful. The Ponente and Maestrale can easily surpass 30 to 35 knots, requiring smaller kites (5m to 8m) and solid edge control. Because the wind blows side-offshore across the flat bay, self-rescue confidence and purchasing a rescue boat token from the local beach clubs are strongly advised.
Summer zoning and vibe
During July and August, Porto Pollo buzzes with international riders. Kitesurfers have their own dedicated zone to prevent conflicts with windsurfers. After sunset, the beach bars along the isthmus turn into vibrant meeting points with sunset DJ sets and surf culture.
