Spot Guide & Local Knowledge

Punta Umbría, located on the coast of Huelva between the Atlantic Ocean and the Odiel Marshes Biosphere Reserve, is one of the most consistent and beloved thermal kite spots on the Costa de la Luz.

The legendary Canaleta thermal breeze

During the hot summer months, Punta Umbría benefits from a powerful sea-breeze phenomenon known locally as the Lebeche or Poniente. As the mainland warms up, clean ocean air is drawn into the estuary, producing 15 to 20 knots of silky smooth, warm wind from 3:00 PM until dusk almost every sunny day.

La Canaleta & Mosquito Club

The focal point of the kite community is Playa de la Canaleta, near the entrance of the Ría de Huelva. This spot is famous not only for its wide, golden sands and gentle waves, but also for its legendary beach club, the Mosquito Club, which hosts live reggae and acoustic concerts, yoga sessions, and beach volleyball after sunset.

Seabed and safety

The beach slopes gently into the Atlantic, with fine sand and zero rocks. Beginners can stand up comfortably in the shallows, while advanced riders can cruise along the breakwater where flat water pools form.

Safety precautions and local advice

Stay outside the main shipping channel of the Ría de Huelva, and respect the summer buoys separating bathers from the kitesurf channel at La Canaleta.
