Spot Guide & Local Knowledge

The Ria de Alvor, situated between the picturesque fishing village of Alvor (Portimão) and the golden headlands of Lagos in the western Algarve, is recognized as the premier flat-water kitesurfing estuary in southern Portugal.

The Algarve thermal engine

During spring and summer, intense solar heating of the interior Alentejo plains pulls cool ocean air across the coastal hills. The wind, known as the Nortada (North/Northwest), funnels down the Alvor river valley, hitting the lagoon side-shore at 16 to 25 knots almost every sunny afternoon from 2:00 PM until dusk.

Mirror-flat lagoon arena

Protected from ocean waves by the expansive sandbar of Meia Praia, the water inside the lagoon remains completely flat. Huge sections of the lagoon are waist-deep, allowing beginners to learn waterstarts with total confidence and advanced freestylers to pop unhooked handle passes on a glassy surface.

Picturesque Algarve village

Alvor village retains its charming fishing port heritage with cobblestone alleys, whitewashed houses, and world-class seafood restaurants serving fresh grilled sardines, prawns, and Cataplana.

Safety precautions and local advice

Avoid riding into the marked oyster farm beds (viveiros de ostras) located in the upper estuary. Keep track of the tide table, as the lagoon provides the best riding from mid-tide to high tide.
