Spot Guide & Local Knowledge

El Puntal de Laredo, situated at the tip of a spectacular 4-kilometer sand spit separating the Bay of Santoña from the open Cantabrian Sea, is one of northern Spain’s most versatile kitesurfing arenas.

How the wind works at El Puntal

During sunny spring and summer days, thermal heating triggers the Northeast (Nordeste) sea breeze. Blowing side-onshore at 14 to 20 knots, it is funnelled into the bay, providing smooth, reliable power over cool, clean green waters with dramatic views of Mount Buciero and the fishing town of Santoña.

Spacious natural sand spit

The beach at El Puntal is hundreds of meters wide at low tide, providing abundant space for setting up, self-launching, and landing with complete safety.

Water conditions

Inside the bay, the water is relatively smooth with gentle chop, making it ideal for twintip freeriding and hydrofoiling. At the outer point where the tide meets the ocean swell, wave kickers form for testing jumps.

Safety precautions and local advice

Avoid kiting with Southerly (Sur) winds, which blow down violently from the Cantabrian Cordillera with unpredictable gusts. Be mindful of outgoing tidal currents near the ferry crossing channel to Santoña.
