Spot Guide & Local Knowledge

Playa del Regatón, located on the inner eastern shore of the Asón River estuary (Ría de Treto) in Laredo, is Cantabria’s secret flat-water freestyle haven.

The estuary flat-water advantage

When a low-pressure front pushes wind from the Northwest or North, while the outer ocean is wild and stormy, El Regatón provides an astonishing contrast: completely flat, glassy water sheltered from ocean swell by the surrounding green hills.

The tidal window

El Regatón is strictly a high-tide spot. You must plan your session to coincide with 2 hours before to 2 hours after high tide. During this 4-hour window, the rising tide fills the estuary with waist-to-chest-deep water over soft sand, creating a dream-like freestyle lagoon.

Natural park setting

Surrounded by the salt marshes of the Marismas de Santoña Nature Reserve, the setting is peaceful and rural, with eucalyptus forests and mountains reflected in the water.

Safety precautions and local advice

Do not stay in the water once the tide drops below mid-tide, as the water drains rapidly leaving muddy sand flats. Avoid the gusty South wind.

Frequently Asked Questions about Laredo - El Regatón

Insider answers from local riders
Why is El Regatón so famous for freestyle?
Because the estuary completely blocks ocean swell, creating mirror-flat water where you can pop unhooked tricks with zero chop.
Can you ride at low tide?
No. You must ride within 2 hours of high tide; at low tide the estuary dries into tidal mudflats.
Where is it located?
On the western side of the Laredo peninsula, facing the Asón River estuary.
