Spot Guide & Local Knowledge

Los Lances Sur is the urban beach of Tarifa, running directly alongside the town promenade down to the historic causeway of Isla de las Palomas. It offers the unique convenience of launching your kite right outside your hotel or apartment.

How the wind works here

The beach faces Southwest, making it an optimal arena for Poniente winds. The breeze blows cleanly from the open sea, delivering steady, ungusty power. In winter, passing low-pressure systems push clean Atlantic groundswells that create excellent wave-riding sections along the shoreline.

Summer restrictions

Because of its proximity to Tarifa town and heavy bather presence, kitesurfing is strictly forbidden in Los Lances Sur from mid-June to mid-September. During these months, all riders move north to Los Lances Norte or Valdevaqueros.

Winter haven

From October to May, this spot transforms into an expansive high-performance arena for local riders. You can finish your session on the sand and walk straight into the historic walled town for hot coffee and tapas.

Safety precautions and local advice

Stay well clear of the rocky causeway leading to Isla de las Palomas (the southernmost point of continental Europe). With strong south-westerly storms, the shorebreak can become powerful.
