The mouth of the Río Jara marks the transition between the urban sector of Los Lances Sur and the expansive wild sands of Los Lances Norte. While historically famous for photographs of its tidal lagoon, current environmental regulations require strict compliance from visiting riders.
TOTAL KITESURFING BAN INSIDE THE LAGOON (LA CHARCA)
The inland tidal lagoon that forms during spring high tides is a strictly protected wetland bird sanctuary within the Estrecho Natural Park. Kitesurfing and windsurfing are STRICTLY PROHIBITED inside the lagoon year-round. Environmental rangers and Guardia Civil (SEPRONA) actively monitor the marshland and issue heavy fines (up to €3,000) to anyone flying a kite inside the protected lagoon basin.
Authorized riding on the open Atlantic (Los Lances)
The legitimate kitesurfing spot at Río Jara is strictly on the open Atlantic ocean, directly outside the sand spit bordering the estuary. With Poniente (W/SW), the wind blows steady side-onshore with rolling waves and kickers. With Levante (E/ENE), the wind blows side-offshore creating dead-flat water close to the beach, which strictly requires rescue boat coverage (Sea Angels voucher) during the operating season.
