Spot Guide & Local Knowledge

Valdevaqueros is the undisputed temple of European kitesurfing. Nestled in the protected horseshoe bay bounded by Punta Paloma and its gigantic sand dune, this spot delivers reliable wind over 300 days a year.

How the wind works in Valdevaqueros

The spot works with two dominant wind patterns: 1. Poniente (West/Southwest): Blows side-onshore from the Atlantic, bringing cooler, ultra-steady air and fun rolling swell. It pushes riders naturally back to the sandy shore, making it exceptionally safe for learning and freestyle. 2. Levante (East): Blows from the Mediterranean through the Strait of Gibraltar. It accelerates down the valley, hitting the bay in a side-offshore angle. Because the coastline curves toward the dune at Punta Paloma, riders who drift downwind end up stranded safely on the sandy beach rather than open ocean.

Best conditions and water surface

Near the shoreline during Poniente, the water is smooth with small kickers. With Levante, the water becomes butter flat in the lee of the point, turning the area into a world-class playground for speed runs and Big Air take-offs.

Summer regulations and kite zones

From June 15 to September 15, municipal maritime regulations divide the beach into strict zones. Kitesurfing is strictly restricted to the sports area between ION Club and the dune. Swimming zones are clearly marked with yellow buoys.

Safety precautions and local advice

With strong Levante, the wind blows slightly away from the beach. Buying a Sea Angels rescue insurance voucher (bono de rescate) from ION Club or local surf shops is highly recommended before launching.

Frequently Asked Questions about Valdevaqueros - ION Club

Insider answers from local riders
Is Valdevaqueros safe with offshore Levante wind?
Yes, because the bay curves down to the massive sand dune of Punta Paloma, which acts as a giant natural safety net catching riders before open water. Rescue boats also operate daily.
What kite size should I bring to Tarifa?
For a typical 75 kg rider, a quiver of 7m and 9m (or 8m and 11m) covers over 85% of days, with a 5m/6m recommended for hardcore Levante storms.
Where can I park my car or camper van?
There is a large dedicated car park directly behind the beach at ION Club and Tangana, accessible from the N-340 highway.
